Meet Dr. Rahul Patil

Rahul Patil, MD

Fellow With a Cause

Dr. Rahul Patil started his life on the west side of India in Pune, Maharashtra. It was there he decided he wanted to become a doctor. Fast forward to today, and you will find him in Louisville, Kentucky, learning and working as a fellow in the Kleinert Kutz Fellowship Program. But it was something that happened to him between Pune and Louisville that gave him the cause he fights for.

Dr. Patil was practicing hand medicine in Oman when a 14-year-old girl presented with a severe avulsion (a pulling or tearing away) injury to her right index finger. “She sustained this injury as she was trying to get her favorite dress out of a washing machine before it had stopped completely,” he explained. “Unfortunately, in spite of the improvements in the safety features in washing machines, these types of injuries are common in Oman.”

During the surgery, the team was able to stabilize the skeleton, revascularize the tissue, and ultimately save the girl’s finger. “She went on to achieve full range of motion and has normal function and near-normal appearance of her hand. She and her family are happy about the outcome,” shares Rahul.

Dr. Patil’s department treated 110 washing machine injury cases in just four years, and unfortunately, a significant number of their patients underwent amputation or developed lasting deformities. Working with the Ministry of Health, his department began an awareness program. “These injuries are particularly common in girls in the age group of eight to fourteen. This young girl (his former patient) is actively helping us to spread the word and prevent similar incidents. Her spirit of helping others makes her special.”

Dr. Patil graduated from Shri Bhausaheb Hire Government Medical College in Dhule, India, and hopes to return to Pune after his fellowship. He is currently reading The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, and says he finds inspiration from this quote by George Washington Carver, “Start where you are, with what you have. Make something of it and never be satisfied.”

Just like his young patient from Oman, Rahul Patil also has a spirit of helping others. And we think that makes him special too.
