Hand Therapist: Hand’s Down the Best to Treat Your Hand Injury!

Our hands are VITAL in everything that we do. Think about it...we use our hands to eat, to dress, to work, to wave, to type and to text. We use our hands to function! It should come as no surprise, then, that a hand injury can be life altering. That is why it is so important to ensure proper care and function of our hands.

What Can a Hand Therapist Offer?

The goal of hand therapists is to identify the personal goals and needs of the patient to help them reach maximum function in their daily lives.

Hand therapists provide education to guide the patient in strategies for optimal recovery through edema reduction, joint protection, scar management, and sensory normalization. Hand therapists can fabricate custom orthotics to protect, mobilize or support tissue. Hand therapists monitor progress and recovery and help patients or avoid potential pitfalls or complications.

Why a Hand Therapist?

Did you know that to obtain the Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) credential, a hand therapist must practice as an OT or a PT for a minimum of three years? In that time period, the therapist must accumulate 4,000 hours of direct care in hand and upper extremity treatment. Hand therapists must also pass a certification examination to demonstrate competency in anatomy and physiology, tissue healing, surgical procedures and post-operative intervention and care for many complex conditions.

Why the CHT Credential?

People value the use of their hands and any loss of function through injury or accident may have a devastating effect on their lives. Anyone with an injury wants the very best of treatment to assure maximal recovery. The CHT credential is recognized by many professional organizations as a benchmark for excellence in advanced specialty credentialing in health care. The Certified Hand Therapist credential offers assurance to the public that the therapist has achieved the highest level of competency in the profession and stays up to date with practice within the field.
