Happy Earth Day!

While many families are busy planning outdoor activities, hand surgeons from Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center urge parents and children to be mindful of hand safety during the spring season. The proper precautions can help individuals avoid serious hand and arm injuries.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), emergency rooms treat more than 400,000 outdoor garden tool related accidents each year.

  • When working in the lawn or garden, keep the following safety tips in mind:
  • Wear protective gloves that do not restrict movement.
  • Use tools with grips that properly fit your hands.
  • Keep garden tools clean and sharp.
  • Provide proper storage of garden tools to prevent accidents.
  • Always lift with your legs, especially while shoveling, and bend at the knees, not the waist.
  • Always wear shoes.
  • Never allow children to ride on lawn mowers or play nearby.

Unfortunately, accidents do occur. If case of a laceration, Dr. Huey Tien, M.D. with Kleinert Kutz recommends the following steps be taken:

  • Elevate the hand above the heart and apply pressure to the wound with a clean cloth.
  • If after applying continuous pressure for 15 minutes does not stop the bleeding, seek emergency care
  • If any numbness or inability to move the fingers occurs, seek emergency care.

“Immediate medical attention is important,” said Dr. Tien. “The longer a patient waits to seek medical attention, the more difficult the repair will be.”
