Lawn Mower Safety Tips

Summer has arrived, which means warmer weather and longer days. Unfortunately, the summer months also bring the Kleinert Kutz hand surgeons numerous emergencies caused by lawn mowers- almost all of which are preventable with proper operation and precaution.

Lawn mower injuries are often catastrophic and require lengthy reconstructive operations. Especially as it pertains to children, we believe that more awareness needs to be brought to the prevention of these injuries and amputations. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 800 children are run over by riding lawn mowers each year and more than 600 of those incidents result in amputation. 20,000 people are injured by lawn mowers each year and for children under 10, lawn mowers are the most common cause of major limb loss.

To help avoid serious injury or amputation, please follow the safety tips listed below.

In case of a hand, wrist or arm emergency, the Kleinert Kutz physicians are on-call 24/7 throughout Louisville. Call (502) 561-4263 to be directed to the nearest on-call facility.
