Kleinert Kutz Hand Surgeons Performed Kentucky’s First Double Hand Transplant

On August 24, 2010, a team of 21 hand surgeons from Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center performed a bilateral hand transplant on an Edmond, Oklahoma man, Dr. Richard Edwards. Kleinert Kutz’s hand surgeons started the operation at 7:00 p.m. and finished 17 ½ hours later on Wednesday afternoon.

“This is a breakthrough transplant. This is the first time a transplant has been done where we have allowed a patient’s tissue to remain within the new hands. We connected the tendons from the donor hand to the recipient hand since neither was damaged. By using the recipient’s tissue, we have opened up new opportunities” said Warren C. Breidenbach, M.D. with Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center.

The 55-year-old double hand transplant recipient made his living as a chiropractor before losing both hands when his truck caught fire on February 11, 2006.  Unable to escape the burning vehicle, he was severely burned on his face, back, arms and hands, leaving very little tissue left in both hands.
