for comprehensive care of hand patients. In 1960, he established the Christine

surgeons in the Louisville community, chooses a nationally acclaimed surgeon
to receive the Yandell Award. Previous recipients have included Dr. Michael
DeBakey, world renowned heart surgeon at Baylor University and Professor
Harold Ellis, Commander of the British Empire and English Surgeon. The
award is named after the Society's first president, David W. Yandell,
M.D., who was instrumental in founding the Louisville Surgical Society
for surgeons whose interest leads them in the quest for a scientific knowledge
of surgery and its accompanying art. Dr. Yandell was appointed Professor
of Surgery at the University of Louisville and Visiting Surgeon to the
Louisville General Hospital in 1869, where he reigned supreme until 1898.
He was also President of the American Medical Association and the American
