History

Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center, with internationally known surgeons and researchers, has grown steadily for more than 50 years. Our goal is to restore to patients the function and quality of life associated with strong, healthy hands, wrists and arms. Since 1960, more than 1,200 physicians from 58 countries have been trained as Hand Fellows in advanced micro-surgical techniques in our Institute.

Significant Achievements

Significant Achievements: Nation’s first five hand transplants, one of the world’s first cross-hand replantations, pioneered work in primary reconstruction using free tissue transfer and national award for research in blood flow to the nerve. We Performed the World’s First: reported repair of a digital artery, bilateral upper arm replantation, reported successful technique for primary flexor tendon repair, vascularized epiphyseal transfer and bilateral forearm replantation.

Hand Transplant

As composite tissue allotransplantation (CTA) progresses from its investigational status to a standard-of-care option for persons with traumatic amputations and disfiguring injuries, civilian and military healthcare providers require access to the scientific advancements of this field. The current military actions in the Middle East demonstrate that, although protective equipment and the early, skilled response to injuries have saved more lives than in past conflicts, the exposure to improvised explosive devices has increased the frequency of devastating limb and facial damage.

Joseph J Gilene, FACHE - CEO

Kleinert Kutz and Associates warmly welcomes our new CEO, Joseph J Gilene! Joe brings immense experience as a performance-driven CEO with a solid record of accomplishments at a senior healthcare management level. He has an extensive background in healthcare management and finance, having demonstrated the ability to improve financial results and clinical quality, and patient safety in major hospital chains across the country.

Joe received his Bachelor and Masters in Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati. He is also a Certified Public Accountant. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

In the course of his long career in healthcare management, Joe has served as Vice President for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Chief Operating Officer for Providence Health System/Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA. Later, he served as Administrator for Carolinas Healthcare System/Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Subsequently, he served as Chief Administrative Officer for Robert Wood Johnson Health System and Robert Wood Johnson University. He went on to serve as Regional Vice President for Quorum Health Resources in Brentwood, TN. His career path eventually led him to Kentucky, where he served as President for Catholic Health Initiatives/ St Joseph Hospital in Lexington and then as Market President for Catholic Health Initiatives for the Kentucky region. It was in this last role while working at Jewish Hospital in downtown Louisville that he came into contact with us at Kleinert Kutz. Our regular interactions with him led to the development of mutual respect and liking for one another. When the need arose for new leadership at Kleinert-Kutz, we chose Joe, and he chose us!

As we approach 2021 with renewed enthusiasm and hope, we look forward to working with Joe Gilene. His proven leadership abilities and extensive networking within the local community and state will serve as an invaluable asset as we continue to deliver the Kleinert Kutz mission of superb hand care expertise. With his help, we promise to preserve the legacy of our dear departed senior partner Joseph Kutz, M.D. and everyone’s teacher and beloved founder Harold Kleinert, M.D.
